Welcome to GPOGUY.COM

Welcome to GPOGUY.COM

Welcome to GPOGUY.COM -- The Internet Source for Windows Group Policy Information and Utilities!

What is Windows Group Policy? Group Policy is the main configuration management technology available in Microsoft Windows. It leverages Active Directory and provides control over security configuration, desktop lockdown and software deployment, to name just a few things, in a Windows environment. Because of the power and complexity of Group Policy, many people find it daunting to use the technology to its fullest. That's why I created this site.

I have put together this site as a resource for all things Group Policy related--hopefully with more advanced information than you'll find elsewhere. I'll be adding more stuff as I can, including some cool scripts and Group Policy-related utilities that I and others are writing. Check out What's New below for the latest additions.

Also, if you have a need for commercial, fully supported Group Policy Management solutions, you can visit the company we started--SDM Software, for some innovative Group Policy management solutions.

Finally, if you have questions about Group Policy, consider joining our GPTALK mailing list, which is over 600 members strong and growing!

Thanks for stopping by.

Darren Mar-Elia

What's happening on GPTalk Mailing List

  • DBITGuy just posted 'RE: [gptalk] Old IEM ESC conflicting with new Site-To-Zone Assignments?'

Darren- Thanks again for the support. While troubleshooting I actually had looked at the path you mentioned. No such luck. No .ins anywhere. I've found some traces of this policy's GUID in the registry, but when I delete or modify them it ...

  • dmarelia just posted 'RE: [gptalk] Group Policy Local settings'

You should have no issues editing policy from Win7. As for using ADSIEdit directly, I would say that it would probably be ok, but I don't know for sure, so it might be something to ask some of the AD experts on the ActiveDir mailing list. Darr...

  • derekschauland just posted 'Re: [gptalk] Group Policy Local settings'

Hmmmm Thats good to know, thanks. I avoid editing group policy from my desktop because I have 7 installed and there were some changes to AD and Group Policy if I remember right.... will using GPMC from Windows 7 cause problems in 2003 AD? ...

  • dmarelia just posted 'RE: [gptalk] Group Policy Local settings'

Well the thing that drives how accounts behave from a password policy perspective is what is in AD on that Domain NC head, rather than what is in the GPO. GP is just a mechanism for getting those attributes populated. There is a special thread that r...

  • derekschauland just posted 'Re: [gptalk] Group Policy Local settings'

Indeed... many times some with the reboot option and some without. I think we tried that on all the domain controllers. It seems like policy is rosy on all domain controllers other than the PDC Derek On 3/11/2010 3:39 PM, Darren Mar-Elia ...

  • dmarelia just posted 'RE: [gptalk] Group Policy Local settings'

Ok. So something "corrupted" the domain NC head with invalid data. Did you try doing a gpupdate /force on the PDC emulator, just for grins? -----Original Message----- From: gptalk-owner@lists.gpoguy.com [mailto:gptalk-owner@lists.gpoguy.com] On B...

Picking up computer group membership changes without a reboot - Tuesday, August 26, 2008

If you're using GP-based security group filtering to control GP processing by computers, then you know that, normally, when you need to make a change to a computer's group membership, it must be rebooted to pick up that change. However, check out this blog posting I wrote recently for a way around this:

Keep in mind that the setting in this ADM is a "preference", not a policy, and therefore must be disabled rather than set to "Not Configured" when you're ready to deliver IE 7.
